There are a few disadvantages in using LEDs, however these are being addressed and reduced constantly as demand for the greater benefits of LED lighting grows:
Initially LEDs can be expensive to purchase however the cost has reduced to the point that installing LED lighting can have a cost payback of less than a year.
Not all are dimmable so specification need to be made when installing
There are still occasional compatibility problems with existing low voltage transformers when retrofitting
Size – high powered LED downlights may be taller than halogen lights which may be an issue if roof space is limited, however more options are becoming available all the time.
Quality and colour of light has been an issue in the past but has improved dramatically over recent times providing a variety of choices
