Create Layered Lighting Effects for a Beautiful Room Design

When considering interior design, people often place their focus in the visible items within the home such as furniture, appliances, textiles, art, and paint; one of the most overlooked and underappreciated features are the luxury lighting ideas we come across everyday. These elements provide an amazing opportunity to showcase those items that are so carefully chosen for inclusion in the design, enable energy efficiency, and produce functional capabilities in every room of your home or office.

Lighting comes in three basic types: general illumination, task lighting, and accent. For the ultimate ambiance in a space, a combination of the three is ideal. Here’s a brief glimpse at what each of these mean.

General

This lighting is the type which is often found overhead. It is used to provide an overall illumination of a room.

Task

Lights used for work areas is typically brighter and closer to the location where tasks are performed. Good examples include a desk light, or under cabinet lights in the kitchen.

Accent

Lighting used to provide focal points, such as in bookcases, highlighting artwork, or back lighting for a television or computer monitor. These are often used to create a subdues variance in brighter lighting that has been placed.
